CMMB Mobile TV Service Available during Beijing Olympics
June 27, 2008
On June 26, China's SARFT (State Administration of Radio, Film and Television) and BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee for the 29th Olympiad) jointly announced that, starting from the day on, users can enjoy up to ten mobile TV programs for free during the Beijing Olympics by means of any portable terminal with a built-in receiver chip that supports China's homegrown CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) standard, Sina Tech News reported.

The CMMB technology enables portable terminals such as mobile phones, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), MP4, notebook PCs, and DSC (Digital Still Camera) to receive television signals. At the same time, the SARFT also announced that it will donate 1,000 CMMB-enabled terminals to the BOCOG for use during the Beijing Olympics. From now through year-end 2008, the SARFT will conduct trials of the CMMB network in 37 Chinese cities, and the network is slated for commercialization in 2009, according to the same report.
